When a Zombie loses his voice

An unusual concert last night at the Boulder Theater with the Zombies.

The Zombies still have original singer Colin Blunstone. I’ve always liked the music and they don’t operate like a cover band, so I see them when they come around.

After the first song, Blunstone said his voice was giving out, something he later said had never happened in 60 years of performing.

The show became a fascinating endurance test. He waved off an early song with too many high notes, but he gamely worked through their set. At one point I thought he was going to walk off for good.

Meanwhile the crowd was most supportive and by the end of the show was singing popular songs for him..

He has an unusual high voice anyway that always sounds like he is straining but he kept at it until it pretty much was gone by the time they played “She’s Not There.” No encore and they were gone.

They ended up playing 13 songs instead of their usual 17, and the instrumental fills had enough extra time to make me wonder if they were filling the minimum time clock and helping out poor Colin.

The only thing missing was a graceful acknowledgement from the band about how understanding and supportive the lively audience was.

It would have been a nice and deserving touch on a strange night.
