Up until this year, when the Cardinals failed to pay big for a free agent, usually finishing second, they would say the winning bid was crazy. The media would fall in line and fans would follow.

It won’t work this year. After last season, the excuses that worked in recent years just won’t cut it.

I presume Cards management knows this.
