Young Elvis in Cape

Wanda Jackson is sometimes thought of as the first female rock and roller. (the only time I ever saw her perform was when she was up in the years and played a free concert in Central Park in New York, and still pulled off “Let’s Have a Party”.

In a book I just read with interviews of live performers, Wanda recalls the first time she met Elvis Presley.

It was July 20, 1955.

What struck me was that while 7-year old Jack Lovelace was less than a 100 miles to the north, Wanda was meeting Elvis in Cape Girardeau Missouri.

They played two nights in Cape, Wanda was the opening act. And while Elvis was not a national breakout yet in those early days, Wanda says Elvis on stage was fun, would flirt and the girls in the audience would start moving up to the front of the stage.

And would get a lot crazier.
