I just watched Sam Spade.

It started off strong but got confusing and tedious.

What didn’t help is that our hero smokes constantly. And he is dying of lung cancer. And coughs constantly.

Gee what a pleasant viewing experience.

It reminded me of Maestro, the not very good movie about Leonard Bernstein where he always has a cigarette in his mouth. I’m surprised he didn’t cut some performances short so he could suck in some smoke.

I don’t care if he actually did smoke that much. Just fudge on camera.

For God sakes, Bogart didn’t smoke this much in movies.

I didn’t realize that the new Hollywood had cut back so much on screen smoking until I see shows and movies like these.

It has now joined my holy trinity of a movie from hell.

A movie shot with a handheld camera, where everyone smokes constantly and it is shown in near total darkness.

Now there is an artsy directors dream.
