I am a big Billy Joel fan. I always admired the fact that he quit writing songs for years.

I was surprised when he released a new song.

And it is dull. Not worth it.

And he joins a club of older performers who write songs that don’t have the zip, the wit, the fire from the younger days.

It’s not impossible. The new Rolling Stones album bucks that trend. The lead song on the recording “Angry” is listenable over and over again.

Now I don’t expect 75 year old men to write “She was just 17”.

But I would like a little fire, a little edgy.

And if the fire is out, hearing the oldies will just have to do.
