Richmond Virginia.
Downtown. I stopped to pump gas before going to the art museum.
I hear this voice.
“Suh”
“Suh”
I ignored it hoping it would go away.
After the third time I turned. A guy had pulled up in truck, silver flowing hair, a gentleman’s hat. His voice was like Tupelo honey.
“Suh, I am embarrassed to have to ask you this. I am working down at the museum and I foolishly left my billfold at my worksite. Could you be so kind as to pay for my gas and I will pay you…….
I nodded a firm stern no.
The third time I looked back he was finally gone.
I suggested to family members it would have been fun to suggest I would drive him back to get his billfold, but that would have been wrong.
Grifters are everywhere but there is something special about southern grifters.
