Service people are often trained to use questions to engaged the customer in friendly banter.

I remember Enterprise Leasing used to have a particularly aggressive feelgood bunch when we would rent a car in St. Louis.

They would start in on the way to the car, where are you headed, how long, who are you seeing, on and on, to where it became more chore than positive.

I always got laughs from family members when I said I expected the next question to be “So are you going to have sex while you are in St. Louis?”

Restaurants are notorious for the server after you place your order to say “That’s a good choice.”

I am always tempted to ask if anyone ever makes a bad choice.

My drive thru coffee shop, which I love, has the wonderful servers trained to ask what your plans are for the day.

I admit to growing weary of making up shit instead of saying I’m going home to nap and stare at the wall.

It would be tempting to answer the what are you doing today with “Snort coke and then rob a bank.”

But harmless is harmless.
