Winter’s Bone is one of my all time favorite movies. Jennifer Lawrence’s first big role, a story set close to where I grew up.
The movie came from a book of the same name by Daniel Woodrell, who just died.
I read other books by him, enjoyed them, even went on a movie junket on one made from his book about the Civil War. Woodrell’s Ozark and Missouri interests always spoke to me.
Winter’s Bone was directed by Debra Granik, a fascinating woman.
She has made two “commercial films”, Winter’s Bone and six years later Leave No Trace another terrific film. That’s it. ever.
It is sad on a personal level that she has not either found the financing, interest or right fit for more commercial films.
One tidbit I found that tells you a lot about just how good she is.
It is hard to get 100 percent positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Impossible for major films.
Leave No Trace has more reviews than any other film to get 100 percent ratings.
