Mark Twain: Where did that town go?

An anecdote struck home for me when I began reading the Mark Twain book by Ron Chernow.

Twain goes back to the Mississippi River years after he used to be a pilot.

He was shocked out how much the river route had changed.

The boat stopped at a “god forsaken rocky point” to let passengers off for an inland town.

Twain could not remember the name of the town which bugged him since it used to be on the river. He finally made a guess. “Ste. Genevieve”, and he was right.

He said it used to stand on high ground”handsomely situation”, but was now a “town out in the country.”

Since Ste. Genevieve is very near where I grew up and is a place I have visited and enjoyed many many times, it was an interesting to find the story in the book.

Grumpy Twain should know it is very close to the river and considered a treasure of French and German heritage in a beautiful area.
