These maddening crime press briefings

Watching coverage of the latest shootings and stabbings, I have to react to the police press conferences offering updates.

I don’t want this to sound insensitive. They have a tough job.

But the endless time spent praising cooperation between law enforcement agencies and political operations is maddening, and useless. Isn’t that their job?

We want news. If you don’t have it, or don’t have more than a nugget or two, get on and get off.

Somewhere in the public relations handbook for handling law enforcement updates in these troubling times, has to be a mantra: be specific, offer news, get on and get off.

Now the media will finish by asking a series of questions that range from asinine, repetitive and insensitive, to one’s that are sharp and need to be asked. But that’s on them.

I was stunned after the Rob Reiner stabbing to have Los Angeles police call a press briefing and not name who the victim was while the cable news outlet was posting pictures of Rob.

I just suffered through as much as I could take of politicians and police fumbling around the impatient questions about Brown University’s shooting, mostly praising each other, until I had to flee to post this.

Just stick to the facts and come to the microphone if you have something to really say.
