Not just another day in the life

You would think at the age of 78 your music memory stories would all be past tense.
But last night I got a new one.
We went to see Robyn Hitchcock at a small venue in Fort Collins. We almost didn’t buy tickets, I didn’t know his music beyond absolutely loving a song from way back called “Raymond Chandler Evening” which I noticed he often doesn’t do in concert.
Leading up to the show I listened to his music and liked what I heard. As I did last night live.
He charmed his way through a bunch of his songs (including Raymond Chandler).
He always does a couple cover songs, quite well, for his encore. He said he had a request for Desolation Row by Bob Dylan and I was stunned as he plowed through this lyrical many versed song without a cheat sheet perfectly in his own style. Impressive.
Then he said he wanted to finish by coming into audience to sing the Beatles “Day in the Life” with us
So he strolled around and we all song. There is something special about blurting out “4000 holes in Blackburn Lancashire” with Robyn four foot away singing it with me while looking in my direction.
As he finished his stroll and we got to the end where the orchestra swells for a long finish he said ” count to five and we all yell “Bong”.
And we did.
I’d never quite experienced anything quite like this before. It was fun, warm and we rolled into the night with huge smiles.
You are never too old to have new fun.
