Independently dumb

Reviews were mostly bad for the new Independence Day so I was braced.

Critics were right. It is more dumb than good, although I wasn’t upset at spending the two hours.

I was all set to bemoan the fact that Robert Loggia, the top military guy in the first one and one of my favorite actors, was never mentioned as being in the remake. I assumed it was because of his recent death.

But there he is in a scene being honored. He looked so bad it had to be very close to the end. It was painful.

On a lighter but still sad note, the movie ends by setting us up for our heroes to save the universe and take the fight far beyond the surly bonds of earth.

Keep your fingers crossed it doesn’t happen.
