Who needs a menu?

A vicious take down of Peter Luger’s steakhouse in New York in the New York Times food review section reminded me of our family experience.
Twenty years ago my son graduated from NYU and we went to Peter Luger’s to celebrate. I picked Luger’s after some research. We had just been to Las Vegas and I had rare luck at a slot and won some money at a Luxor slot machine. I knew Luger’s was all cash so I put it in an envelope.
After we were seated the crusty server wandered over and curtly asked if we wanted menus. I said no and smiled. He laughed and said “who needs menus, you want steak” and like a dam break, the food began to flow. Steaks, tomato platters, enough leftover steak to feed the grads for a few more days.
We had enough cash.
It is a fond memory.
